Bleeding Through is one of the most important bands to take the mixture of extreme metal and hardcore punk to international prominence, releasing landmark albums and touring the world with Slayer, Bullet For My Valentine, Machine Head, Marilyn Manson, AFI, Cradle Of Filth, HIM, MTV2's Headbangers Ball: The Tour and Ozzfest (twice).
The Orange County based band returns with their self-titled album on Rise / Roadrunner. Produced by Zeuss (Hatebreed, Shadows Fall, Throwdown), the album is the definitive work by the band, full of anthems mixing the best of black, thrash and death metal combined with shredding guitar solos, symphonic keyboards and angry vocals.
Bleeding Through was formed in 2000 by frontman Brandan Schieppati, best known at the time as the guitar player for bands like Eighteen Visions and Throwdown. Bleeding Through was his singular vision: an extreme band for extreme times.
"This is Love, This is Murderous," which introduced bass player Ryan Wombacher and fan-favorite keyboardist Marta, went on to sell over 150,000 copies in the US alone thanks to hard-touring that included an impressive slot on the Ozzfest festival in 2004. Tracks like "Revenge I Seek" and "Love Lost" remain staples of their live set.
"The Truth" followed in 2006, kicked off with a massive US headlining tour where Bleeding Through was supported by Every Time I Die and Between The Buried And Me. Touring continued for over two years before the band reconvened under a dark cloud of business-related frustrations to make "Declaration," their most aggressive album.
The new self-titled Bleeding Through album is their masterwork. Introducing new lead guitar player Dave Nassie (ex-No Use For A Name), the band has outdone themselves in sheer aggression, musicianship and songcraft. Schieppati's lyrics and vocals continue to lead the charge. Bleeding Through are a world apart from their peers and have set yet another standard for all of their many imitators to aspire to with this latest album.
The follow-up to The Truth (2006) and This is Love, This is Murderous (2003) was produced by Devin Townsend in Vancouver, British Columbia. Declaration is incredibly dense, layered and full of atmosphere, recalling the finest moments of classic death metal, black metal and hardcore. Bleeding Through's Declaration will not be stopped.
Winds Of Plague
From the shadows of Los Angeles, Winds of Plague has been hitting the West Coast indie music scene for the last three years. They offer up fast and heavy hardcore melodies served with an attitude that gets your attention every time. This young band brings energy, emotion, and mayhem to the stage. Their dark blend of eerie keyboards, insane drumming, and snarling vocals, which flow into slow, brutal breakdowns are their signature sound. Winds of Plague is built on principles, both musically and lyrically. Musically they stretch beyond the boundaries of the cookie-cutter metal found on CD racks today. Their fresh approach to the use of keyboards as the backbone for their songs ensures that they will not be confused with the overwhelming metal-mania emerging lately into the hardcore scene. Lyrically they go beyond complaints of broken hearts and being swallowed by the cold darkness, exploring themes of human nature which transcend the adolescent tales of love lost and mistaken identity, which are found as so many anthems for bands today.
With their first CD "A Cold Day in Hell" on Life Sentence Records, Winds of Plague is ready to bring their unique sound to the table and break all boundaries. "Originally formed in 2006 as a grindcore band by guitarist Jeremy Carroll, Chicago's Oceano went through a revolving cast of players until settling on a new lineup and a new sound in 2007. The final lineup, consisting of Andrew Mikhail (guitar), Danny Terchin (drums), Adam Warren (vocals), and Kevin Colabuono (bass), would go on to develop the group's current sound. Pushing the limits of extreme music and influenced by Behemoth and the Acacia Strain, the band transitioned into a heavier, more technical death metal sound. This change was helped along by adopting the severely detuned "dropped A" from one of Mikhail's past bands, creating a guitar sound that was as thick and murky as Warren's anguished growls. In 2008, the band signed to Earache Records, and began a heavy touring schedule. That year also saw the departure of Carroll and Colabuono and the arrival of bassist Jason Jones. Tuscaloosa, Alabama brings us Gideon, an aggressive, melodic hardcore band with an already impressive repertoire. Well-placed gang vocals and a powerful front man set Gideon apart from many of their peers, while the band as a whole, whose members have been playing together only since 2008, come off sounding like seasoned pros. Their Facedown debut "Costs" (engineered by Brian Hood) will be released on March 1, 2011 and will be supported by non stop touring including Facedown Fest in Pomona, CA (April) and Cornerstone Festival in Bushnell, IL (July).
Taking a page from the tape-trading days of the past, Chicago metallic hardcore savants Sworn In took the DIY route when it came time to spread their gospel. Instead of trying to score a deal with a record label from the beginning, like so many other young bands do, Sworn In let their music do the early grassroots work.
"When we started this band a couple of years ago, our plan was just to post all of our music online, for free, till we released our first album," Sworn In vocalist Tyler Dennen explains. "99% of the hype on this band has come via social networking. We have toured nonstop and any time we meet one of our fans, they tell us they first learned about us through Twitter, Tumblr, Facebook or another social networking site."
The word of mouth on Sworn In was so strong that the folks at Razor & Tie knew they had to join forces with the Chicago combo. They signed them in the winter of 2013. Featuring a crushing mix by Brian Hood (A Plea for Purging, The Crimson Armada), The Death Card – Sworn In's new debut album – follows up the band's previously released two EPs - Catharsis and Start/End.
The Death Card was already finished by the time Sworn In – which besides Dennen also features drummer Chris George, guitarists Zakary Gibson and Eugene Kamlyuk and bassist Sean Banks – signed on with the white hot label. "We already had enough money from touring and selling our merch to pay for everything on our own, so we headed to Nashville and recorded the album with Brian. Our guitar player, Zak, suggested working with Brian since he was a big fan of his work with the band Gideon. We're all glad we did," says a rightfully proud Dennen.
A relentless attack to the senses, The Death Card is not only stacked to the rafters with one ferocious guitar riff after the other, it's also a concept album with lyrics weaving a nightmarish tale throughout the 13 tracks.
Dennen's striking lyrics manage to cut through the group's sonic assault on The Death Card, which isn't surprising since he mined from his own life for inspiration. "I was born and raised Jewish, but I never really got into religion. When I was around 13, my family joined a synagogue and the rabbi there got close to our family and came to our house a lot. Anyway, I went on to find out that my mother was having an affair with him and my parents ended up getting divorced because of it. Here was this guy who was up there preaching about family morals and he ends up doing what he did.
The main character in the album goes through a very traumatic experience throughout the story. The song 'Hypocrisy' is where the trauma hits and the journey begins and it's like my big "fuck you!" to the rabbi and the whole situation."
In terms of the story arc and its cohesiveness, The Death Card triumphs where many other concept albums fail. "I wanted the flow of the songs and lyrics to show how this character loses his mind more with each track. By the time the album ends, he's accepted his fate."
Lyrics aside, pit dwellers also have plenty to sink their teeth into throughout The Death Card, with tracks like "Mindless," "Deadpan" and "Death" entwining dynamic rhythmic shifts within the chaos that will surely leave dance floors caked with all kinds of bodily fluids. "I'm into breakdowns and that kind of stuff, but I think a lot of bands are overusing some of the same tricks," says drummer Chris George, who also writes in the band. "In a song like 'Deadpan' I use dissonant chords to create more of an effect and feel, rather than make it the focal point of the track. In 'Death,' we even included a blast beat part and that's the kind of unexpected thing we love doing when we write."
George's musical inspiration on The Death Card might surprise some listeners. "My early influences were definitely metalcore, but as I started getting into heavy music more, I went back and fell in love with bands like Slipknot. What I wanted to do with our new album was to create a new, darker kind of nu metal sound and combine it with the technicality of Meshuggah. I wanted to bridge the gap between those two worlds."
With The Death Card hitting stores supported by Razor & Tie's muscle, and the quintet keeping up their tireless touring schedule, it's only a matter of time before Sworn In transform from underground rising stars to headlining heroes.
